Germany Culls Poultry as Bird Flu Spreads Nationwide
The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) reported that the current outbreaks are similar to the severe wave experienced in 2021, which was one of the most devastating years for avian influenza in the country.
The institute stated that bird flu has now been detected in 30 different farms, prompting the culling and disposal of various poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, as a measure to prevent further transmission.
The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) also cautioned that "it is impossible to predict how the situation will develop," signaling uncertainty over the progression of the disease.
The northeastern states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg have faced the most significant losses.
In Brandenburg's Markisch-Oderland district, local authorities announced plans to cull an additional 130,000 birds, on top of the 150,000 poultry already destroyed earlier this year.
Additionally, there have been reports of mass fatalities among cranes in the Linumer Teichland region, located in northwestern Brandenburg.
Back in the 2020–2021 winter season, Germany was compelled to cull more than 2 million poultry as a result of widespread bird flu outbreaks.
